How Many Types of Hair Transplant Techniques Are There?
Every procedure in health and aesthetic applications varies from person to person. Each patient or each client is examined according to their current state, expectations and health conditions. Therefore, you will have a preliminary consultation with our hair transplant specialist.
In this consultation, variables depending on your current state and demands are evaluated and discussed, then a plan is determined accordingly. From the very beginning of hair transplant applications, these variables have led to the formation of different techniques.
Hair Transplant Preliminary Consultation
In the preliminary consultation, the current state of the person who will have hair transplant is examined. Hair analysis performed by our experts with special equipment gives a preliminary idea about the factors affecting hair loss and the condition of your hair.
Issues such as the size of the recipient area, the structure of the hair strands, hair length, the characteristics of the scalp, the condition of the donor area are evaluated. After this examination, the expectations of the person play a key role in choosing the hair transplant technique.
It is decided in the light of the expectations of the person who will have hair transplant and the recommendations of our hair transplant experts and hair transplant techniques can be applied according to the current situation of the patient.
Now, let’s answer such questions on types of hair transplant techniques and how to choose a hair transplant technique accordingly.
What are Hair Transplant Techniques?
Hair transplant techniques have been diversified and shaped with the developing technology and demands over the years. Hair transplant techniques are named according to how they are performed. Let’s have a detailed look at different hair transplant techniques.
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) Hair transplant Technique
Follicle is the name of hair, the keratinized tissue that is the visible part of the hair and the other sheath surrounding them. Each of this follicular structure to be transplanted is called graft.
In the FUT technique, the donor and the recipient areas are shaved and prepared for the process. Then, the area to be treated is numbed with local anesthesia. In this procedure, a cut in a strap form is made in the scalp and removed from the donor area, which is resistant to hair loss. This tissue obtained is transplanted by a team to collect grafts.
Grafts are extracted one by one from this donor tissue. The grafts obtained are classified according to their single, double or triple roots to be placed in petri dishes in special liquids. The size of the tissue removed is determined according to the size of the opening. Thus, between 2000 and 3000 grafts can be obtained in this procedure.
In the meantime, the donor area between the two ears at the back of the head where the strip is taken, is sutured due to the removal of tissue. Although this stitch is done aesthetically, it leaves a scar in the area even after it heals.
After this stage, a preparation begins in the recipient area. Small channels of millimetric size are opened along the predetermined forehead line with the help of the punch device, this process continues throughout the entire area to be filled. It is very important to determine the forehead line well at this stage in order to obtain a natural look.
In the next step, the transplant process begins with single grafts along the forehead line. The grafts obtained as previously described are placed one by one into small incisions made in bald areas.
Thus, the process is completed. This technique is not preferred, especially because it leaves scars. In addition, a hairstyle option that will keep the back part of the hair short is also eliminated. It is a hair transplant technique that leaves less hair style options for the person.
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Hair transplant Technique
The most preferred method is FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant technique. The donor and recipient areas are shaved , and local anesthesia is applied.
Unlike FUT technique, grafts are taken one by one using the developed micro motor in FUE technique. There are no cuts in this technique.
The graft collection process begins to be collected with the help of a micro motor. The grafts extracted one by one from the area under local anesthesia are classified according to the number of roots and kept in special liquids in separate containers. This process takes two to three hours depending on the number of grafts to be harvested.
The donor area where thousands of grafts are taken, is the back of the head between ears, which is resistant to hair loss. The density and hair quality in this area are important for the success of the transplant process. In addition, another issue to be considered is not to damage other hair follicles while graft is harvested.
This method, which is very healthy when applied by experts, may cause different problems in unskilled hands. Loss of sensation in the donor area, damage to other hair follicles, some scattered scars, although not like the linear scar form in the FUT technique, can occur. For this reason, you should choose your hair transplant center well.
The number of grafts that can be taken in the FUE technique is up to 4000. Depending on the number of roots in each graft, approximately 11000 hair follicles can be transplanted with 4000 grafts.
When the graft harvesting process is completed, the recipient area begins to be prepared. Small channels opened with the help of punches are then prepared for the placement of the grafts. The number of channels depends on the number of grafts that are harvested. For this procedure, grafts are started to be placed along the forehead line decided by our specialist and the person who will have hair transplant.
Being able to determine a natural forehead hairline also helps to get a more natural look afterwards. In addition, the angles and directions of the channels to be opened in the recipient area will also be decisive for your hair style. If the channel opening process is performed by skilled hands, your hair will be well styled and a natural look will be obtained.
Grafts containing single hair follicles are placed along the forehead line in these channels. Then, the procedure ends with the placement of grafts containing double and triple roots in the channels that are opened in the remaining parts.
The process of carefully placing the grafts one by one to dense the bald areas will be the last step for your natural and beautiful appearance.
FUE Sapphire (Follicular Unit Extraction) Hair transplant Method
The graft harvesting step is exactly the same as the FUE technique. The only difference from the FUE hair transplant technique is in the channel opening phase. However, this difference offers serious advantages for both the person applying and the person who will have a hair transplant. Let's explain what is different about this technique.
A special pen prepared with sapphire metal has been developed to be used in the FUE technique. Normally, in the FUE technique, channel opening is done with the help of punch, scalpel, etc. The channel opening process performed in the skin (dermis) tissue causes slight bleeding in the scalp and crusting after the procedure. In addition, it is difficult to achieve a certain standard in these channels.
Sapphire tipped FUE technique provides us an advantage in this regard. Thanks to these tips, the channels opened in a cleaner and specific standard provide a natural appearance. In addition, another advantage is that the incrustation occurs less than in the normal FUE technique. With the channel opening process made with Sapphire tips, recovery is achieved in a shorter time and less scar formation occurs.
DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) Pen Method
It is a hair transplant method made with a special pen developed by a japanese doctor named Young Choi in 1990. The development for each surgical technique in medicine aims to reduce the recovery time, the amount of trauma and scar tissue formed. With this goal, every surgical procedure develops with new techniques.
The DHI Hair Transplant technique is one of them. Thanks to this developing technique, crusting in the recipient area is much less, and the recovery period is shortened considerably.
In this technique, each graft is placed individually by means of a pen. The part that differs from the FUE technique is the channel opening and graft placement process, the graft supply process is the same as the FUE technique.
In the DHI method, the pen opens a channel and allows the graft to be placed in the recipient area at the same time. Of course, this process requires more attention and meticulous work from the person applying the process, however, it offers many advantages to the person who has hair transplant.
In this process, there may be no need for hair shaving. In addition, thanks to the different tips, more dense hair transplant can be performed without damaging the existing hair follicles. It is frequently preferred by people and especially women who do not want to show that they have had the procedure because it does not require hair shaving.
The pen technique is generally used for eyebrow transplant in women. In this way, operations such as beard tightening can be done easily.
In this process, the grafts harvested are placed into the pens by a team and given to the person who performs the transplant one by one and at the same time, the empty pens are taken back to be refilled. The person who takes the pen inserts the pen at the point to be transplanted, in the meantime, the channel where the hair follicle will be implanted is opened and the graft in the pen is transplanted into this channel. Two processes are executed at the same time.
The change in diameter of pen tips is important in terms of hair thickness. This technique has been developed initially for people with thick hair and now it has become applicable to different hair types by newly developed tips.
Although it has many advantages, it has disadvantages in terms of the application time and the amount of grafts to be applied at a time. The prolongation of the time is also a factor that increases the cost.
Unshaven Hair Transplant Technique
People who want to hide that they have hair transplant, those who have to return to work quickly after the procedure, and women who generally prefer long hair, chose the unshaven hair transplant technique. Even if it is called unshaven, some shaving is required in the donor area. Thanks to the long hair in the nape area, this area can be easily covered.
In fact, this application is not a technique and existing techniques can be applied without shaving according to the condition of the person. The method that minimizes the need for shaving is the DHI hair transplant technique. However, the Sapphire FUE technique can be applied without shaving in this way. While not shaving in hair transplant speeds up the return to work or everyday life, it also offers the advantage of hiding the scab in the area.
In this method, fewer grafts can be obtained due to the limited and small donor area. It is not a technique that can be applied to people with lard bald area.
Which Hair Transplant Technique Should I Prefer?
The FUT technique is a method that is not preferred anymore. That's why we will not dwell on it much.
If the size of the open area is large, it would be more logical to use the FUE technique because this technique is the technique that grafts can be harvested the most. If you want to heal in a shorter time and you want less redness and scab formation after the application, you should choose the Sapphire FUE technique.
You can use the DHI technique if your hair is long and your bald area is small. People who want to have an unshaven procedure should choose this technique, as well.
Of course, your budget will be the determining factor here because the cost of each technique varies according to the number of grafts to be applied to you.
