Beard Transplant in Turkey
A full, defined beard signals confidence, maturity and identity — and patchy or thin beard growth is more common than most men realise. Genetics, alopecia barbae, acne scarring, and asymmetry can all leave gaps where there should be growth. Modern beard transplantation, done well, restores those gaps permanently — and the procedure has evolved significantly in the last five years.
This page walks you through everything you need to know about a beard transplant at Now Hair Time, Istanbul — the technique we prefer and why (DHI), who is a good candidate, the procedure timeline, what recovery actually looks like (the famous "crusting" and "shedding" phases that worry most patients), honest cost breakdown, and the answers to the eight questions men ask us most often.
Why DHI Is Our Preferred Beard Transplant Technique
Beard hair is technically different from scalp hair — thicker shaft, different angle of growth, denser packing per square centimetre. A successful beard transplant has to respect those differences. After years of comparing techniques, our team uses DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) with Choi implanter pens as the default for beard work. Why:
- Angle precision — beard hairs grow at very shallow, varied angles. The Choi pen lets the surgeon control exactly where and at what angle each follicle is placed.
- No recipient incisions — DHI implants the graft and creates the channel in a single step, which means less bleeding and less visible scabbing.
- Higher graft survival — grafts spend less time outside the body, which matters more for beard work where every single follicle has to take.
- Density control — beard density needs to be carefully matched to your existing growth so the result blends in, not stands out.
For very large reconstructions (full-beard cases, severe alopecia barbae), we may combine FUE harvesting with DHI implantation. Your surgeon will explain the trade-offs during your consultation.
Are You a Candidate for Beard Transplant?
Most men who want fuller beard growth are good candidates. The honest exceptions are:
- Active alopecia areata on the beard area — we treat dermatologically first; transplanting into active patches has poor survival.
- Untreated thyroid or hormonal imbalance — these need to be stabilised first.
- Inadequate donor area on the back of the scalp — we always assess donor density before committing to a graft count.
- Active acne or skin infection in the beard area — must be cleared before procedure.
The most common cases we treat are:
- Patchy growth — gaps in the cheek or jaw line
- Thin or non-existent moustache connector
- Asymmetry — one side denser than the other
- Scarring from acne, surgery, or burns
- Genetic full-beard absence (sometimes related to ethnic background)
The Beard Transplant Procedure, Step by Step
- Consultation & Design — Photo analysis, scalp assessment, hairline-of-beard design with your surgeon. You see and approve the shape with a marker before any extraction begins.
- Donor Extraction — Individual follicular units are extracted from the back of the scalp using fine micro-punches under local anaesthesia. Typical beard cases use 1,500 to 4,500 grafts.
- Sorting & Preparation — Grafts are sorted by hair count (singles, doubles, triples) so the right type goes in the right place — singles at the outline, multi-graft units in the body of the beard.
- DHI Implantation — Each graft is loaded into a Choi pen and implanted at the correct angle and depth, one by one. This is the longest part of the procedure (4–8 hours depending on graft count).
- Same-Day Discharge — After a short rest in our recovery room, you return to the hotel with full aftercare instructions, medications, and your direct WhatsApp line to our medical team.
Recovery Timeline — What to Expect, Honestly
This is the part most beard transplant patients want to read carefully. Beard recovery has a specific timeline that surprises people if they have not been told upfront:
- Days 1–3: Small scabs (crusts) form around each implanted graft. The beard area looks like a fresh tattoo — red, slightly swollen, dotted with tiny scabs. This is normal.
- Days 4–10: Crusts gradually flake off with gentle washing. By day 10, the redness fades and the scabs are gone. You can leave the house without anyone noticing.
- Weeks 2–8 (the "shedding" phase): Almost all the transplanted hairs shed. Yes — they fall out. This is expected and necessary; the follicle stays under the skin and regrows. This is the phase that worries patients who were not warned — but it is part of every transplant.
- Months 3–4: New growth begins. Initial hairs are fine and lighter — they will thicken.
- Months 6–9: Visible density. Most men feel comfortable with the result here.
- Month 12: Final result — the hair has the full character (thickness, colour, curl) it will keep permanently.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the transplanted beard hair fall out?
Yes — and that is normal. Almost all transplanted hairs shed between weeks 2 and 8 (the "shedding phase"). The follicle stays under the skin and regrows new hair from month 3 onwards. The hair that grows back is permanent.
Can I shave normally after?
Wet shaving with a blade: from month 2 onwards, very gently. Electric trimmer: from week 3. Full regular grooming routine: from month 3 once new growth begins.
Will the transplanted hairs look the same as my existing beard?
For most patients, yes — we use scalp donor hair which closely matches beard texture for the majority of men. In some cases the texture is slightly different (slightly straighter or finer). This becomes invisible once the beard grows in fully.
Will there be scarring at the donor area?
The donor area is at the back of your scalp. Tiny dots heal over within 10–14 days and are invisible once your scalp hair grows out — even at short scalp hair length, the dots are not visible.
Is the procedure painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. The initial anaesthetic injection in the beard area is the briefly uncomfortable part. Most patients describe the rest as long but not painful — many doze through it.
How long do I need to stay in Istanbul?
Most patients book a 4-day trip: arrival day, procedure day, first-wash day, departure day. Some patients prefer a 5-day trip with a second follow-up wash.
Can I combine beard transplant with scalp hair transplant?
Yes — depending on donor area capacity and the size of both treatment areas. Your surgeon will assess this during consultation and discuss whether to do both in one session or separate them.
How long until my final result?
Visible density at month 6, final character (thickness, colour, blend) at month 12. We document each stage with photos during scheduled follow-up calls at months 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12.

Beard transplant is a permanent procedure. The follicles are taken from your own donor area and, once they settle into the facial area, continue to grow naturally. Over time the skin adapts to the transplanted follicles as the area heals. Individual results vary depending on your donor capacity, the technique used and how closely you follow the aftercare guidance.
