If you've spent any time researching hair transplant clinics in Turkey, you've run into the same question circling every forum thread and Reddit post: is a real doctor doing this, or is it a technician working off a script in a high-volume "hair mill"?

It's a fair question. The volume of procedures coming out of Istanbul every year makes it a reasonable thing to ask, and clinics that dodge it or answer vaguely are giving you real information — just not the kind they intend to. We'd rather answer it directly, with names, credentials, and documents you can check yourself.

Who Performs the Procedure at Now Hair Time

Turkey's Ministry of Health now requires a specific certification for doctors working in hair transplantation, granted only to physicians with at least 10 years of medical experience. The same certification requirement applies to the nurses and medical staff involved in hair transplant procedures — again reserved for those with genuine, demonstrated experience in the field. • European Board Certificate in Dermatology and Venereology (UEMS-EBDV, 2023), awarded after passing the European Board Examination — a credential relatively few dermatologists practising in Turkey hold. It's a voluntary, more demanding exam pursued by physicians building an international-standard practice, not a requirement anyone stumbles into.
• Published, peer-reviewed research, with Dr. Dağdelen as first author, in Dermatologic Therapy (Wiley) — a real indexed medical journal. One paper covers metabolic syndrome markers in psoriasis patients; another is a clinical case series on cutaneous metastasis.

Why This Question Matters More Than It Might Seem

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure, even though it's often marketed with the casualness of a spa treatment. The three questions that actually determine your outcome are simple to ask and surprisingly hard to get straight answers to at some clinics:

• Who designs the hairline and plans the graft distribution?
• Who opens the recipient channels or handles the implantation?
• Who's supervising if something needs a judgment call mid-procedure?

At clinics run purely for volume, the honest answer to at least one of those is often "a technician, not the doctor." That's not automatically dangerous — experienced technicians working under real medical supervision can do excellent work. But you deserve to know which situation you're actually in before you book, not after you've already flown to Istanbul.

• "Does the doctor design my hairline personally, or is that delegated?"

• "Can I see published research or verifiable credentials, not just testimonials?"

A clinic confident in its answers will give you specifics without hesitation. One that gets defensive or vague is telling you something too.

We're not going to pretend every clinic in Turkey operates the same way, and we're not going to pretend the skepticism around "hair mills" came from nowhere. Some of it is earned. The way to respond to that isn't to get defensive about the industry's reputation — it's to make sure the specific clinic you're evaluating gives you real, checkable answers.
